What is it about Christmas in a big city? The hustle and bustle of the people, the sights and smells of food vendors selling delicious treats on the sidewalks, store windows decked out in green, red, silver, and gold… I love being in the city this time of year!
One of our yearly traditions is to spend a day enjoying all of the Christmas fun in Philadelphia. As a child, I would walk through A Christmas Carol at Strawbridge & Clothier and then head over to the Wannamaker building to catch the light show. It’s so much fun to share these traditions with my kids.

Free Ways to Celebrate Christmas in Philadelphia
Macy’s Christmas Light Show
First, if you have never been inside the Wanamaker Building, you are in for a historical treat. Wanamaker’s was the first department store in Philadelphia, and the store as we know it today was dedicated in 1911 by President Taft. Those fans of the movie Mannequin will recognize the store and the famous Eagle statue!
The 15-minute show features classic Christmas songs and scenes, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman. At select shows, you’ll even hear the historic organ play!
The light show runs from Black Friday through New Year’s Eve, Monday through Saturday, 10:30 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, 4 pm, and 6 pm, and Sundays, noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm.
Visitor’s Tip: You’ll want to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the start time to secure a spot for the show. Some visitors prefer watching from the ground floor, while others will stand at the 2nd and 3rd-floor railings to watch.
Macy’s Dickens Village
One of the best Christmas activities in Philadelphia is the A Christmas Carol walk-through at Macy’s (and the old Wanamaker Building).
The entire story of A Christmas Carol is portrayed in 26 scenes using animatronics. Children can visit and get a photograph with Santa Claus at the end of the walk-through.
The Dickens Village is open from Black Friday through New Year’s Eve, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, and is free to enter. However, you must make advanced online registrations to visit the Dickens Village. Reservations open up five days before the date you want to visit.
After you wander through the Village, kids can stop to let Santa know what is on their wish list and get a photo, too!
The Comcast Holiday Spectacular
Comcast has been inviting visitors into their warm lobby for over a decade to watch a 15-minute show on one of the world’s largest LED screens.
The show incorporates various winter and holiday scenes, including a ride through the snow, a ballet sequence from “The Nutcracker,” and a portrayal of the “12 Days of Christmas”.
The show runs from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day, every hour from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., except 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.
Before or after the show, you can enjoy a delicious meal from the food court on the lower floor.
Franklin Square Holiday Festival
The Franklin Square Holiday Festival is an event all on its own.
Not only is the park covered in twinkling lights, but they recently added the Electrical Spectacle Light Show, where the lights dance to music! It’s one of our favorite light displays near Philadelphia.
The park, offering its usual mini-golf, has added fun events like Santa’s Arrival, a Dreidel Giveaway, a Kwanza Celebration, and a kid’s countdown to the New Year. There is also curling for 2024! The lights turn on November 16th and stay on through the end of February.
Franklin’s Winter View offers plenty of food options. Nightly, starting at 5:00 p.m., the firepits will roar as visitors can purchase hot chocolate, wine, beer, and fun cocktails, along with many other food options.
The Miracle on South 13th Street
For almost two decades, the residents on the 1600 block of South 13th Street have been lighting up the street. Visiting this light display has become a time-honored Philadelphia tradition.
Each resident decorates their home with Christmas lights, inflatables, and other fun decorations, making this a top holiday activity in Philadelphia.
The lights turn on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and stay on through New Year’s Day. We recommend enjoying this attraction on foot, especially as parking is limited on the street.
